Agency to Designate Habitat for Dragonfly
A lawsuit was filled against the US Fish and Wildlife service in order to cause the state of Michigan to take action. This was all brought about by five envrionmental groups about a dragonfly! These environmental groups got a federal judge to sign an order to protect the endangered Hine's emerald dragonfly. This type of dragonfly has bright emerald colored eyes, a green thorax with yellow stipes on it and is two and a half inches long. Due to habitat loss from the draining of wetlands, these insects are completely extinct in ohio and Indiana. The regulations on the dragonflies habitat are to begin next year and there are hopes to have a final rule by May of 2007. Once the regulations are set in place, all federal agencies will have to consult the Fish and Wildlife service before making any sort of action in the critical area, to insure the insects saftey.
