Police Lab's Troubles Grow
Problems in Houston's police crime lab have brought executions to a stop for the time being. Along with having a run down facility, investigations have proven that innocent people have been convicted and even executed there, due to inaccurate evidence. For this reason, Houston's top police official called for a moratorium on executions for those who were convicted on evidence handled by the crime lab.
the inaccurate evidence included about 280 abandoned and mislabeled boxes of evidence that were discovered in a police property room. The evidence was sent there by the crime lab. It included a fetus, body parts, guns and other weapons. The boxes hold evidence dating from about 1979 to 1991. There was the chance of evidence contamination and improper analysis. For this reason DNA testing by the crime lab was stopped, along with the executions.
