U.S. storms Iraqi city; 110 reported killed

Early Friday morning in Samarra, Iraq, some 3,000 American troops, backed by Iraqi force launched a major assault to gain control of the insurgent stronghold of Samarra. The U.S. military said 109 insurgents and one U.S. soldier were killed. Troops backed by tanks pushed through the streets releasing rocket-propelled grenades and rifles from rooftops. They entered around midnight Friday and sporadic firing was still heard in the early morning. By Friday afternoon, U.S. and Iraqi forces were in control of about 80% of the city. The hospitals in Samarra ran out of bandages, oxygen, and other supplies. Women, children, and elderly were among the dead. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6095119/
