CBS Producer on Thin Ice After Guard Story

Mary Mapes, a veteran CBS producer, is very close to losing her job. Despite Mapes' two highly publicized television stories on the abuse of prisoners by American soldiers in Iraq, and the announcement of Strom Thurmond's biracial daughter, she is possibly facing the end of her career for publicizing false reports on President Bush's National Guard service. The real crime behind this story is that Mapes reported most of the National Guard story, obtained the fraudulent documents, and as well, passed on the phone number of the fraudulent document source to the Kerry campaign. The only reason why Mapes still has her job, is because CBS was apparently unaware of the real motives behind the documents. The source of the documents, Texas National Guard Officer, Bill Burkett, gave the documents to CBS so that CBS would arrange a conversation with the Kerry Campaign. Once that is figured out, Mapes' future at CBS will be decided.
