Area Codes, Now Divorced From Their Areas

In these mobil times, one cannon be sure that the area code they are calling is actually where they think it is. 212 used to be just Manhattan, now you could get Tokyo; 914 used to be Westchester County, New York, now it is also Baghdad. This change could become confusing to some people. Area codes used to be a number to know where the call was going, to know what physical place a person was. Some just see it as the continuing evolution of humanity. This is not the first time controversy has arrisen with area codes. When they were first introduced in 1947, places were identified by the neighborhood, for example GRamercy-3, with the first two letters coresponding to numbers that the oporators dialed. One group organized the Anti-digit Dialing League, but like today, they didn't stop progress.
