Police officer killed in Colombian rebel attack

On Sunday leftist rebels attacked police working in the remote town of Choco in the western Colombian jungle. Six people were injured and one officer was killed. The group of rebels calls itself the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. Army troops were able to regain control after the attack. This isn't the first attack that FARC has attempted. In January three officers were taken to exchange for rebel prisoners. They were held off by police and nearly 40 soliders. FARC has been fighting with a smaller guerrilla outfit, the ELM, for nearly 40 years now. More than 3,000 people a year die in their struggle to overthrow the Colombian government. The town of Choco were these attacks took place has turned into a large production center for cocaine in recent years. It is also a large part of drug and weapons smuggling through Panama. Coincidently the attack on Sunday took place at the same time as the earthquake. Luckily however, the quake cause no major injuries or damage.
