Great White Shark Sets Record at Aquarium
A great white shark has just set a new record in time spent in captivity. At the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in California the year old shark has spent a total of seventeen days in captivity. Scientists believe that the reason this attempt seems to be succeeding is that the shark is still very young and she has had a gradual transition to the enclosure. The one year old great white is four feet and four inches long, weighing sixty two pounds. After being caught by a fishing net, the shark was moved to a four million gallon pen, where researches believe she became used to being in an enclosure. Now she is on exhibit in a one million gallon tank, where she continues to eat and shows no sign of stress. The main reason the manager wants to put her on display is for the hope that she will help reverse the image placed on sharks by entertainment such as "Jaws". Already the attendance has jumped up fifty percent since her arrival.
